Granholm cuts East Jordan to Bellaire snowmobile trail

LANSING — Slashing through the final six bills in the state budget, Gov. Jennifer Granholm vetoed the proposed Bellaire to Jordan Valley snowmobile trail on Wednesday.

The trail was written into House Bill 4446, which provides 2009-10 spending for the DNR and Department of Environmental Quality.

A week ago, the governor approved the legislation, but vetoed the trail before signing the bill.

"I'm disappointed because this is a tourism issue, and this could bring serious tourism dollars," State Rep. Kevin Elsenheimer (R-Kewadin), who along with Sen. Jason Allen has included the language for the trail.

The Michigan Snowmobile Association estimates snowmobiling brings more than $1 billion in revenue for the state.

The proposed trail would extend from the expansive Jordan Valley network of trails surrounding East Jordan to the city of Bellaire and the Shanty Creek Resort.

While no specific dollar amount was to be set aside for the trail project, finances would have been taken from the $976,900 in appropriations for additional projects.

"Historically, the reasons for canceling the trail have been weak," Elsenheimer said.

Among other roadblocks, the DNR previously cited the trail as being too close to a river and a detriment to the red-tailed hawk.

"They aren't even here in the winter," Elsenheimer said, noting that the hawks do not nest in the winter.

Allen and Elsenheimer fought for more than a decade before successfully connecting Cheboygan and Gaylord to the state snowmobile trail four years ago.

Randy Danforth, the owner of T and R Yamaha in East Jordan, said the snowmobile industry impacts Northern Michigan in winter just as the weather does in the summer for local businesses.

"Whether you are directly related to the snow industry or not, it affects you with trickle down of how money is spread around," Danforth said.

In addition to not having a new trail in the area, snowmobilers in Michigan took a hit when the state raised trail permit stickers from $25 to $35 for the 2009-2010 winter.
