How many groups/organizations do you have to support the sport & voice some positive comments ?? We have a BIG motorcycle group "CCC" & a few ATV clubs that are growing steadily.
Triple, where did you get the winter info on trails? I see Nemadji is pretty much closed now due to the rain. We had a nice ride up there couple weeks ago fortunately before it closed.
I talked to the DNR couple weeks ago, they are going to propose opening the willard mungar to ATV's. Public vote is this winter, I'll post the info when I get it. That will be awesome and connect the ST. croix to Nemadji by trail, instead of the Gandy Dancer.

JJJ,
I just spoke with the DNR. The posted "Normal season" closed NOV 1st is not an official shut down date. The trails are technically open he said until Dec 1st when sled trails open. Accept for Nov 8-23 Firearm season of course. Then after that, its a "grey area" he said due to the poor winters we have been having, they are allowing ATV's to ride the trails if they are frozen and not groomed. Its confusing, he admitted to me, but its really weather dependant, they want to be fair to the sleds and atv'ers.
He did state it is illegal to ride groomed sled trails with atv, but the book only states "Grant in Aid" trails.
It basically boils down to local enforcement, our common sense etc.
I know they normally post all groomed trails in the Nemadji closed in the past, except for the last few years they haven't. I think because by the time we got enough snow to ride in feb/march, the sleds give up and go elseswhere to ride, and they let the ATV's ride. Which seems fair. Long as I know I'm not damaging the trail, I don't feel bad about riding the groomed trails, especially if there is no sleds to be seen. We are paying for the trails too, might as well ride them. Unless of course they are posted closed.
I follow the law, and common sense, usually the enforcement agrees with this thinking around here.

In the northern lower peninsula of michigan we have "dual purpose trails" that are for sleds only IF there is 4" of snow or more.Same story here dismal snowfall allows us ATV riders to ride almost any time.

Here is a shot in the arm.
Yamaha Awards Grant of $10,000 to Aitkin County Land Department
Donation Supports 70-Mile Trail Project as a part of ongoing efforts to encourage safe, responsible riding and sustainable, open riding areas in Northern Minnesota
3 Feb 2009 (Aitkin, MN) - The Aitkin County Land Department (ACLD) is pleased to announce it has received a Yamaha OHV Access Initiative grant of $10,000 to support the 70-Mile ATV/OHM Trail Project. The grant was awarded as part of Yamaha's OHV Access Initiative promoting safe, responsible riding and open, sustainable riding areas. The funding will be used to develop signs and maps to support use of the trail, and youth safety classes are also being planned.
Farm Island Repair & Marine of Aitkin, a local Yamaha dealership, provided a letter of endorsement as part of the grant application.
"This project will help expand OHV trail and rider opportunities in North Central Minnesota and is well supported by local rider clubs and businesses," says Deb Olson of Farm Island Repair & Marine.
The 70-Mile Trail Project includes the development of an extensive, first-rate ATV/OHM trail system in Aitkin and Itasca Counties. The trail is designed to be environmentally sensitive, economically beneficial and community supported.
"The counties completed the environmental review process for Phase I of the project and construction will begin this winter with initial right-of-way clearing and staging of materials," says Mark Jacobs, Aitkin County Land Commission.

Construction of 70-Mile Trail Project Begins Initial work includes clearing of the Phase I Right-of-Way
(Aitkin, MN) - Work has begun on the 70-Mile ATV/OHM trail in Aitkin and Itasca Counties. Contractors have been selected to begin clearing the right-of-way for the Phase One routes and to stockpile materials to be used in construction this summer.
"The initial work is being done during frozen ground conditions to minimize soil impacts," says Mark Jacobs, Aitkin County Land Commissioner.
The Phase I routes for the project include the Lawler North and South Loops, the Solana Forest Loop, and connecting trails from Pengilly to Warba and between the North Soo Line and the Moose River trail system.
As work on the trail routes begins the counties are reminding trail riders to stay away from construction zones and to not use the routes until construction is complete.
"Although the trail clearing has begun, the trails won't be ready for use for awhile. Riding on them before they are ready may cause damage that could result in additional construction costs and ultimately the trails being closed," says Jacobs.
