 EPI Rear Spring for Kawasaki
« Thread Started on Mar 31, 2007, 4:58pm »

I just installed the red EPI rear spring on my Prairie. I did not have to unscrew the shock end off of the piston rod. on the 2003, if you lift up on the piece that has an arrow pointing to it in this picture
[image] , there is a split ring retainer and once that is removed, everything just slides right off.

I was able to compress my spring while it was on the machine similar to the way I did it on my progressive spring install for the front struts.

This picture is from the front strut, but I did it the same way for the rear shock.
You insert the tie down straps as shown and compress the spring using the weight of the machine and someone sitting on it; tighten the straps and release the weight from the machine.
I used the same method to compress the new spring only I did this by hand.

There is way too much slop in the bottom of this spring. I talked to someone else that has the 700 Prairie and the problem was not present. In order to shim it up, I used plumbers tape (metal strap) and wrapped it around the cup several times then soldered it in place and wrapped in it electrical tape (for looks). This tightened the bottom of the shock up to par and I am confident that my fix will hold just fine.

I am still waiting on my new axle, so I am not able to give any ride results yet.

Here is a picture of the installed spring.

Here is a picture of the stuff I used to close the gap between the outside diameter of the cup and the inside diameter of the spring.

Yup, I tried getting that ring out of there when I put my spring on. No go so I wound up taking the whole end off the strut. I think when I painted the end of the shock years ago it glued that ring right in there. The EPI spring is definitely worth the money. Rides great and is almost like installing a lift kit in your quad as it will raise it up a bit.
